DIY: Hot Chocolate Bombs

DIY: Hot Chocolate Bombs

We know its summer, but sometimes the mood for hot chocolate just hits!

After a day in the sun at the pool or lake, sometimes the addition of a cozy cardigan and hot drink in front of a bonfire really wraps the day up nicely.

What you need:

  • Chocolate Almond Bark*
    • *Double check packaging for nut allergies. Candy melts and other meltable chocolate coatings will work, too.
  • Hot Cocoa Powder
  • Varieties of toppings (Marshmallows, Sprinkles, Crushes Mints, Etc.)
  • Semi-Circle Molds
  • Microwavable mixing bowl
  • Microwavable plate (Preferable ceramic)
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Wax Paper
  • A Large Spoon

Step 1:

Separate a desired amount of chocolate chunks in a microwave safe mixing bowl and microwave for 30 seconds. Stir the chocolate, and repeat until the chocolate is fully melted.

Step 2:

With a large spoon, take a spoonful of chocolate and fill the semicircles of your mold. Cover the rim, make sure the mold isn’t visible, this could cause holes. It's okay to make a mess! Getting a little chocolate on the edges of your semi-circles is okay. 1 Hot Cocoa Bomb = 2 semi-circles.

Step 3:

Freeze molds for about 5 minutes or until solid.

Step 4:

POP THEM OUT! Place them on wax paper for much easier clean up.

Step 5:

Warm a microwave-safe plate in the microwave for 1 minute.

Step 6:

Grab a chocolate semi-circle and place it face down onto the warm plate (this helps flatten to edges). Take 2-tablespoons of cocoa powder and add it to the semi-circle. Make sure not to get any on the rim. Add in whatever you would like! We have some crushed mints that we are adding to the mix. You could also stuff it with marshmallows!

Step 7:

Grab another semi-circle, flatten the rim on the plate and attach it to the filled circle. Heating up the rim help it adhere to the other semi-circle. Use the extra heated chocolate to help secure and/or fill any small holes.

From here, you can leave it as a regular chocolate ball, OR we can spice things up a bit with some decorations...

Like we did previously, melt some microwavable chocolate (almond bark, candy melts, etc.) into a bowl. Vanilla flavored chocolate makes a nice drizzle and visual accent.

With a large spoon, drizzle the new melted chocolate over the ready made Hot Cocoa Bombs. Quickly, before they chocolate dries you can add sprinkles or other toppings. Package them for a friend or enjoy them yourself! Add to hot chocolate or hot water for an extra special treat.
